1. Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile application for managing your Ledger hardware wallet. It is free, open-source, and available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Always download Ledger Live from Ledger's official website to avoid fake or malicious builds.

Where to download

• Visit the official page: https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live (always check the URL carefully)
• Select your platform: Windows (.exe), macOS (.dmg), or Linux (.AppImage/.deb). Mobile versions are available on the App Store and Google Play.

Verify the download (recommended)

For highest safety, verify the checksum (SHA256) or use Ledger's instructions for signature verification. This prevents tampering during download.

2. Install & Launch Ledger Live

After downloading, run the installer appropriate for your OS and follow on-screen instructions. When launching for the first time, Ledger Live will prompt you to accept terms and configure a few basic settings.

macOS

• Open the .dmg, drag Ledger Live to Applications, then launch from Applications.
• macOS may show a security prompt — allow Ledger Live in System Preferences if necessary.

Windows

• Run the .exe installer, accept prompts, and choose an install folder.
• Windows Defender may scan the app; allow it if downloaded from the official site.

Linux

• Use the provided AppImage or install the .deb package if available for your distro.
• Make the AppImage executable then run it: chmod +x ledger-live-desktop.AppImage && ./ledger-live-desktop.AppImage

3. Set up your Ledger device

If you already own a Ledger hardware device (Ledger Nano S Plus, Ledger Nano X, etc.), follow these steps. If you don't have a device yet, buy only from Ledger's official store or authorized resellers.

Initialize a new device

1. Power on your Ledger device and select "Set up as new device" on the device screen.
2. Create a PIN directly on the device — this PIN is used to unlock it and must be memorized (not stored digitally).
3. Write down your recovery phrase (24 words by default) exactly as shown. Ledger never asks for your recovery phrase outside the device. Keep this phrase offline and secure.
4. Confirm the recovery phrase on the device to ensure it was recorded correctly.

Restore from an existing recovery phrase

If you previously owned a hardware wallet or recorded a recovery phrase, choose "Restore device" during initialization and enter your recovery phrase directly on the device. Do not enter your recovery phrase on your computer or phone.

4. Add accounts in Ledger Live

Ledger Live lets you add accounts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and thousands of other assets via apps. The apps run on your Ledger device, and transactions must be confirmed on-device for security.

Install apps on your device

• In Ledger Live, open the Manager tab and connect your device.
• Install the app(s) for the cryptocurrency you want to manage (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).

Add an account

1. Go to Accounts → Add account.
2. Choose the currency and follow the prompts — Ledger Live will scan the blockchain for existing addresses related to your recovery phrase.
3. Give the account a friendly name to help you identify it later.

5. Receiving & sending funds

When receiving funds, always verify the address on your Ledger device screen. For sending, compose a transaction in Ledger Live and confirm the details on your device before signing.

• Always confirm the address shown in Ledger Live with the one displayed on your device.
• Confirm amounts and fees on-device before approving any transaction.
• Use small test transactions when sending to a new address for the first time.

Do

• Buy hardware wallets only from official sources.
• Keep your recovery phrase offline, in a waterproof/fireproof safe if possible.
• Use a strong PIN and never share it.
• Regularly update Ledger Live and your device firmware via the official app.

Don't

• Enter your recovery phrase into any website, app, or chat.
• Share device details, screenshots of your recovery phrase, or private keys.
• Use unofficial firmware or third-party tools that request your recovery phrase.

If Ledger Live doesn't detect your device, try these steps:

• Ensure your cable is data-capable (not charge-only) and securely connected.
• Try another USB port or a different computer.
• Check Ledger's support pages for compatibility notes and updates.

Firmware update problems

If a firmware update fails, do not enter your recovery phrase on a computer. Follow Ledger's official recovery instructions and contact Ledger support if needed.

Your recovery phrase is the only backup of your private keys. If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore funds on a new compatible device using the recovery phrase.

• Hardware backup: use metal seed backup plates to engrave or stamp your 24 words.
• Split storage: store parts of the phrase in separate, secure locations (but avoid making it reconstructable by many parties).
